Objective
The objective of gin rummy is to have sets or runs and the deadwood, I.e., the number of cards left except for the sets and runs should be less than 10 points. You can see the below gin Rummy scoring to know the card values.
Once a player ends the round by knocking, rest of the players lay down their valid card sets and runs. The cards remained are scores.
The points to win are generally agreed upon by players before starting the rounds. This usually is 100 points.
How to Play Gin Rummy?
- Kings/Queens/Jacks = 10 points
- 2 – 10 = Face Value
- Ace = 1 point

- The game starts with the dealer distributing 10 cards to each player.
- The rest are placed faced down as Stock pile.
- The top most card is faced up and to its side is the Discard pile.
- The players are to now sort their cards to put them in sets (at least 3 cards of the same number. Like 5 of spades, clubs and diamonds) and runs (at least 3 cards in consecutive sequence. Like 5,4,3 or K,Q,J)
- Now according to the cards available with the player and those present in the discard pile, players can choose if they want to take a card from discard pile.
- Or else you can take a faced down card from the stock pile.
- A tip here would be to discard the cards that don’t fit into the sequence of your cards or which you find useless.
- Pick only those cards that might help you complete a set or a run. If any such card is present in the discarded pile, just pick it up.
- End the game by placing your cards if your deadwood score is 10 or less than 10. Deadwood score is the sum total of the cards with you except for the sets and runs.
Rules
- Each player is distributed 10 cards.

- Set is a sequence of at least 3 cards of the same number.

- Keep an eye on the discarded cards. if any player discards a card, notice that card and see if it can help you complete a set or run.
- See the cards your opponent is picking. If they are picking a certain card, make sure to not throw that into the discard pile at your turn.
- Go for runs than sets. You can add runs before or after a card but with sets, the probability to get that particular card lessens.
- Don’t wait don’t knock. All the above were mere side tips. But the main motive of the game is to meld your cards into sets and runs.
