How to Setup
The dealer is selected randomly amongst the players. The cards are then shuffled by the dealer. Generally, one deck will do for 3 to 4 players and for 5 to 8 players, two decks will be enough. The players have to be given their full hand in a single deal.
The first card is given faced up to the players and the hand given is equal to that card value. If the first faced up card received by the player is an Ace, then 11 cards are dealt.
Face Cards result in 10 cards dealing. And for the numeric cards, the hand is equal to the face value of that card.
For instance, if a player receives a Joker, they get 10 cards for their hand. If a player receives a diamond of 7 cards as the first faced up card by the dealer, then they get 7 more cards for their hand.
The dealer too gets the cards in the same way. The faced up first card of the dealer is the wild card for the game round. So if the dealer’s revealed card is a Queen, then all the queens are the Wild Card.
Once the cards are dealt to each player according to their first faced up card, the game can then begin.

The game starts with the player on the left of the dealer. The game proceeds in clockwise direction. All players have 3 sections to their turn to finish as below –
1. Drawing cards
2. Playing melds
3. Discarding a card
Drawing Cards
On their turn, the players have to first draw cards. They can draw cards in 5000 rummy using the below 2 options –
1. Draw card from top of the Stock pile – Simply draw a card from the stock pile, add it to your hand and move ahead with the game.
2. Draw one or many cards from the discard pile – No rules on taking only the top card from discard pile. But you cannot discard the same card at the end of that turn. If a player draws more than one card from the discard pile, then the lowest card drawn has to be used in a meld or else it becomes an invalid turn. You can take all other cards on top of the lowest card and take it in your hand. Except the lowest card, you can discard any other card at the end of your turn.
Melds
Melds are combinations that help players score points from their hand. These melds are to be placed by the player in front of them at the time of scoring points. There are generally 2 types of MELDS –
1. Sets – Sets are 3 or more combination of cards of the same rank as the card being played. Example – 3 of clubs, hearts and spades is a set.
2. Runs – Series of cards in order of rank from the same suit. Example – 5, 4, 3, of spades is a run.
Wild Cards
All rounds have Wild cards which are the first faced up card revealed by the dealer at the beginning of the game. If a Player has a wild card, they can place it instead of any card in the game.
So in case a player needs a 4 to complete a run with other cards being 5 and 3, then they can add the wild card in its place.
Playing on Melds
It is also possible for players to play cards from their hand to other players melds in the same way as they play on their own. For this, first the player has to announce the table what card they are playing and to which meld.
This card will then be played in front of you for scoring. But this cannot be done until the player has played a meld in front of themselves.
Discarding Cards
Once the cards are played a player has to end their turn by discarding one card to the discard pile. There are no rules on discarding cards except for when a player draws only one card from the discard pile.
Rummy Call
When they do so, they can take the card and announce where it is being played and play it in front of them for scoring.
If a card is discarded which could have been used in a meld, the other players who played melds in front of themselves can call rummy.
End of the Round
A round ends in 2 ways –
1. A player discards their last card – Also known as Going out. Scoring is followed.
2. Stockpile is exhausted and player does not or cannot draw from discard pile – Scoring is followed.
Floating – When a player plays and does not discard their last card, this will not end the round. It is called as floating. This means that the player has to continue playing and drawing cards from the stock pile until they are able to discard a card and go out.
Scoring in 5000 Card game
Once the round is done, the players score their melds.
- Aces, Wild Cards = 100 points.
- If aces are wild = 200 points

In case a player goes out and ends the game, that player scores all points of the cards in the other player’s unused hand.
