Monopoly Rules- How to Setup
Monopoly Rules In order to set up Monopoly game, you will first have to put the board on a table. The chance and community cards have to be kept faced down in their positions.
All the players have to now select a token that will represent them through out the game on the board.
All the Players Get $1500 in Proportions as –
- $500
- $100
- $50
- 5 of $105, $5 and $1.
The rest of the game material and money goes to the Bank. The bank’s money has to be stocked on the edge of the compartments in the plastic tray of the banker.
The Bank and Banker
Players will have to Choose one player as the banker. The banker is required to keep aside their personal funds from the Bank’s funds. In a game of 5 players, the banker can elect one person as the auctioneer.
With the money, the bank also has title deed cards, hotels and houses before the players purchase.
Paying salaries and bonuses is the job of the bank along with selling and conducting auctions of properties. Money needed for mortgages is offered by the banks as well.
Besides all of these, the bank collects fines, loans, taxes and interests and has the right to access the property price. In case the bank goes out of money, the banker can write money on ordinary paper slips.
Monopoly Rules- How to Play
The rolling of dice begins with the banker in order to choose the first player. All the players roll the dice on their turn. The player getting the highest total will begin the game.
The play moves to the left. Two tokens can occupy the same space on the board at the same time.
Now the player will place their token on the ‘Go‘ mark on the board and then roll the dice. The number on dice will be the number of moves the token will have to move in the direction of arrow on board.
On the next turn, the token will move from the point it landed at the player’s last turn.
The place where the token lands will give you the chance to buy property or it may also instruct you to pay taxes and rents, draw a chance or community chest card or could also ask you to go to Jail.
In such a case, the players have to move their token in the space that is marked as Jail on the board.
Go
Whenever a player either lands or on passes Go, the Banker has to pay them $200. Note that players will receive $200 only once going around the board.
But if they pass go and then land on Chance of Community Chest space and draw the ‘Advance to Go’ card, then that player will get another $200 if they reach at Go again.
Buy Property
If a player lands on a property that is not owned by anybody else, they get the chance to buy that property from the bank. As a proof of ownership, the bank gives that player, a title deed card.
The banker simply places the title deed card in front of that player.
In case that player who landed on such a property does not wish to buy it, the banker will hold an auction for the property and then buy it to the highest bidder.
This highest bidder will then pay the bank and get the title deed card in exchange.
Paying Rent
If a player lands on the owned property of another player, the owner collects rent from that player according to the price listed on the title deed card of that property. But if that property is Mortgaged, then no rent can be collected.
Hence, it is beneficial for a player to buy all the properties within a color group as even if one property of that color group is mortgaged, you can still collect rent from other properties of that color group.
Note that the rent on properties that are unimproved is much lower. So, for the game, it will be beneficial to have more hotels or houses so as to get more rent.
Another point to be noted here is that if a player fails to ask for rent before another player rolls the dice, the payment is cancelled. So be quick!
Income Tax
When a Player Lands on the Income Tax Space on the Board, They Get 2 Options –
1. Estimate your tax at $200 and pay the same to the bank. OR
2. Pay 10% of your total worth to the bank. Your total worth is all the cash in your hand. This also includes the mortgaged and unmortgaged property title deed cards. This choice has to be made before summing up your total worth.
Monopoly Rules- Chance and Community Chest
When a player lands on a Chance and Community Chest space on the board, they have to take the top card from the deck.
Then follow the instructions given on this deck and return the card faced down to the bottom of the deck when done performing what’s written on it.
For instance, if a player draws ‘Get out of Jail free’ card, they can use it further in the game if they go to jail. The player also has the option to sell this card to another player if they want to at a price decided by the 2 players mutually.
Mortgages
Unimproved properties can be mortgaged via the bank. You will find the mortgage value of any property on its title deed card. Note that, no player can collect rent no mortgaged properties.
In case a player wants to lift the mortgage on their property, they will have to pay the banker an amount of the mortgage and 10% interest. Owners of the mortgaged property can sell it to other players at a mutually agreed price.
Jail
One of the four corner spaces on the board is the Jail. When a player lands in jail, their turn is suspended until the player pays to get out or rolls a double. A person can land in jail if their token lands on space marked as ‘Go to Jail’ or your roll doubles 3 times in succession. Or the chance card or community chest card says ’Go to Jail’.
Sell Property
Players can sell their unimproved properties for any amount they wish to. But the player cannot sell a property within that color group to another player. They have to sell it to the bank.
Players can sell the houses as well as hotels to the bank for a price half of the original. Note that houses have to be sold individually and in reverse order. You can sell hotels individually or altogether but in reverse order.
Free Parking
As the name suggests, this space offers only free resting place. That is all.
Bankruptcy
If a player owns more than they can pay the bank or another player, then that player is bankrupt.
In such a case, that player has to turn over all their money and properties to the player or banker whom they own and then leave the game.
Who Wins Monopoly?
The player who is the wealthiest of all players wins Monopoly.
